Life

Cyril Bailey studied from 1889 to 1894 at Balliol College of Oxford University , where he also spent most of his later career. From 1894 to 1902 he worked as a fellow and tutor at Exeter College . In 1902 he returned to Balliol College as a fellow. In 1931/1932 he was invited to the University of California, Berkeley as Sather Professor . In 1932 he was elected a member of the British Academy and appointed Public Orator at Oxford University . In 1934 he served as President of the Classical Association. When he retired in 1939, he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Honorary Fellow of Balliol College.

In addition to his work at Balliol College, Bailey was from 1921 to 1939 chaired the council of Lady Margaret Hall , one of the first colleges for women. In his retirement he took part in the editing of the Oxford Latin Dictionary .

Bailey's research focused on the Roman poet Lucretius . He published his didactic poem De rerum natura critically several times and also published an English translation and an extensive commentary. As one of the best experts on Epicurean philosophy , Bailey explained the intellectual history of the work in particular. His contributions to the author's language and textual criticism resigned from his predecessors Karl Lachmann and Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro .

From Lucretius Bailey came to the philosophy of Epicurus and the history of Roman religion, on which he also gave his Sather Lecture in Berkeley. In academic teaching, Bailey preferred Lucretius, Cicero, and Aristophanes .
