The Duewag open-plan car was a type of tram that was previously widespread in West Germany - multiple units and sidecars in open-plan design . They were produced in large numbers by the Düsseldorf manufacturer Duewag between 1951 and 1974. The Duewag articulated wagons , which were produced in even higher numbers from 1956 and gradually replaced the open -plan wagons , are based on the series discussed here . Numerous large sidecars were also procured from the beginning for use behind articulated railcars, which is why these were produced even longer than the large-capacity railcars. The 129 Mannheim large-capacity sidecars , which were built between 1974 and 1990 for Braunschweig and Vienna, are closely related to the vehicles discussed here .

The very first Duewag large-capacity train went to Üstra in Hanover in 1951 , and series vehicles followed from 1952. Düsseldorf initially only received several prototypes . Most of the companies did not purchase series cars until 1954, when the Duewag tandem drive with one motor per bogie was available. The Duewag open-plan cars were also available as bidirectional vehicles . Some of the one -way cars had the typical Duewag front with a sloping front window, which was derived from the US PCC car . The electrical equipment and the controls were supplied by Siemens , BBC or Kiepe Elektrik .

In addition, some licensed buildings of this type were built. These - almost all of them one-way vehicles - were built between 1954 and 1977 under the direction of various companies and are or were to be found particularly in Austria .
