history

The company D'Ieteren was founded in the 19th century by the coachbuilder Joseph-Jean D'Ieteren in Brussels. The company kept pace with developments in the transport sector and developed from a vehicle business to an industrial business. At the beginning of the 20th century, D'Ieteren began producing car bodies for export. Later, the assembly and import of cars and trucks continued.

After the Second World War, D'Ieteren received the exclusive import rights for Studebaker (1945), Volkswagen (1948) and Porsche (1950). The VW Beetle was assembled from 1954 . The car rental business began in 1956 with the rental of the Volkswagen Beetle on the Belgian market. In 1958 D'Ieteren got the Avis license for Belgium. The company imports and sells other makes of the Volkswagen Group: Audi (1974), Seat (1984), Škoda Auto (1992), Bentley (2000), Lamborghini (2001) and Bugatti (2006), as well as products from Yamaha (1975).

In 1999, D'Ieteren and the Cobepa Group took over the majority in Belron as part of a joint venture and thus in the world market leader in the repair and replacement of vehicle glass . In November 2017, a 40% stake in Belron was sold to the US private equity investor Clayton Dubilier & Rice ; the company now holds 54.1% of Belron, but the management is now with CD&R and the management.

In September 2016, d'Ieteren acquired a 41% stake in Moleskine for the first time ; this was increased to 100% following a public takeover offer in early 2017.
