The DB class 483/484 is a type of electric multiple unit that is currently being developed for busbar operation on the Berlin S-Bahn . The class 483 refers to so-called quarter trains, consisting of two cars; the class 484 on the other hand half trains, consisting of four cars. The trains are to be used from the beginning of 2021 (as of May 2020).

history

1: 1 model, 2016
First pre-assembled car body in the Stadler plant in Berlin-Pankow

In April 2013, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg publicly tendered the operation of the S-Bahn sub-network Ring on behalf of the two states , which essentially comprises the lines of the Ringbahn and the south-eastern access routes via the Görlitzer Bahn . The tender also included the procurement of new vehicles by the new operator. After placing the order with S-Bahn Berlin GmbH at the end of 2015, the latter signed a framework agreement with the manufacturing consortium Stadler Pankow and Siemens for the delivery of up to 1,380 cars. At the same time, an initial binding order was placed for 106 trains, consisting of 85 four-car and 21 two-car vehicles. The consortium leader Stadler takes over the mechanical and vehicle construction parts as well as the vehicle production. Siemens is responsible for the electrical part with the drive and braking system, the on-board power supply, vehicle control, train protection and passenger information systems as well as the bogies. The S-Bahn Berlin is investing around 900 million euros in the vehicles and in the necessary adjustments to the Grünau workshop .

In October 2016, the S-Bahn Berlin presented a 1: 1 model of an end car. With its help - together with passengers and representatives of interest groups - the exterior and interior design as well as the equipment and functionality were evaluated in order to incorporate suggestions into the series production if necessary.

The car bodies are manufactured in Hungary, the final assembly of the vehicles in the Stadler factory in Berlin-Pankow and their commissioning in Velten. The first finished car body - a head car of a four-part train - arrived in Berlin in October 2017 for further assembly. The first multiple unit mounted for rolling (484 001) was presented to the press on June 27, 2018 at Stadler's Pankow plant, and the second (484 002) was presented at InnoTrans in September 2018 . The latter was transferred to the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center in October 2018 , where it was tested for around a year with static and dynamic tests under real and extreme conditions. In April 2019, the first five vehicles had completed around 2000 of the planned 160,000 test kilometers. On June 12, 2019, the first quarter train of the class 483 (483 004) arrived at the main workshop in Schöneweide , where it is initially used for training purposes. Evidence runs and driving technique type tests on special sections of the Berlin network during the night hours began in early September 2019. At the same time, the train passed 484 005 tests in the climate tunnel in Vienna. The approval-relevant test drives should be completed by the first quarter of 2020; the contractually binding test operation in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center and in the Berlin S-Bahn network is planned for the second and third quarters. For this purpose, a six-car train has been running all day and almost continuously in the S-Bahn network since the beginning of May, covering a total of 40,000 kilometers by the beginning of July. Vehicle registration is scheduled for September 2020.

The two-part vehicles are listed as the 483 series, the four-part as the 484 series. In the first call, the vehicle numbers 483 001 to 483 021 and 484 001 to 484 085 are assigned. Here (in contrast to the previous numbering for the S-Bahn Berlin), one vehicle number applies to the entire multiple unit, the individual cars are designated with the additional letters A / B or A / B / C / D.

The color scheme of the trains is based on the traditional colors of the S-Bahn Berlin, but has been slightly modified; the colors used are NCS S 2010-Y10R (mustard yellow) and NCS S 1580-R (red), the doors are raised black ( RAL 9005) and the trolleys are basalt gray (RAL 7012). The quarter and half trains will be continuously accessible and - for the first time on trains of the S-Bahn Berlin - will be equipped with air conditioning. The seats are almost exclusively arranged facing each other. Multipurpose areas with side seating are also available. Wheelchair spaces are located in the immediate vicinity of the driver's cab, the doors there are bridged by a gap. An automatic door closure reduces the cooling or heating of the interior. A dynamic passenger information system with real-time data should provide information on the course of the journey and connections. All cars are equipped with a video surveillance system.

In the quarter train there are 94 standing places and 80 seats, 20 of which are folding seats. In the half-train there are 202 standing places and 184 seats, 40 of which are folding seats. Each car has three 1,300 mm wide doors for passengers on both sides, and the end cars also have a door to the driver's cab. Cameras support the monitoring of passenger changes, so that there is no need for exterior mirrors.

Compared to the previous series, the trains should be characterized by a significantly reduced noise level. The maximum speed is 100 km / h. Within a quarter train, all drive-related components are available twice, so that in the event of a drive failure, only one car fails and the other car in the quarter train remains fully powered. Every quarter train has a magnetic rail brake , every half train has two.

commitment

Delivery of the first ten pre-series vehicles is scheduled for the end of 2020. These are to be used for testing on the S47 line between Südkreuz and Spindlersfeld. Passenger operation there is planned from January 2021. With the delivery of the series vehicles from July 2022, the gradual changeover of vehicle use will take place on the S46 line between Königs Wusterhausen and the main train station via Südkreuz, Westkreuz, Westend and Jungfernheide, and from October 2022 on the S8 line between ( Wildau -) Grünau and Hohen Neuendorf and between April and October 2023 on the ring train lines S41 / S42.

A total of 382 new wagons are to go into operation by the time delivery is completed in 2023.Template: future / in 3 years
