DB class 488.1–2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Class 488.1–2 / 888.1–2 is an internal designation for locomotives of the Berlin S-Bahn . The historic trains (488.1 / 888.1 for the Stadtbahn and Wannseebahn types , 488.2 / 888.2 for the 1937 type ) are classified in this series.

Historical trains

The historical trains of the Berlin S-Bahn are only referred to internally as class 488.1–2 / 888.1–2; The vehicles have their original numbers from the operating periods they represent. However, only those trains that can or could be used in passenger service have received this series designation and the numbers provided for it; from the Association of Historic S-Bahn e. V. mostly did not look after non-operational quarter trains.

History of the origins of the historical trains

The first historical train of the Berlin S-Bahn, the later museum train , was returned to the delivery condition of 1928 in 1987 for the 750th anniversary of Berlin. This vehicle is a quarter train of the series ET / ES 165 , type Stadtbahn, designated as of 1941 . It received a newly built interior according to old drawings (3rd class with wooden seats in the motor coach and in the half control car, there also a 2nd class compartment with upholstered seats and mahogany veneer). The train was primarily intended for ordered special trips and was stored in the railcar hall (Twh) Bernau , which is why it was nicknamed Bernauer Viertel .

In 1990, several historic vehicles were put into operation as a traditional train . This train was also made up of quarter trains of the Stadtbahn type , but it reflects the epochs between the 1930s and 1960s. The traditional train was based in the Friedrichsfelde depot and was used every fourth Saturday of the month for special public trips on the Berlin S-Bahn network. The tours, lasting up to five hours, ran over various routes and were organized by members of the Historic S-Bahn e. V., who looked after and entertained the passengers. The rides were very popular in the beginning. From the mid-1990s, the popularity waned because the tours were no longer new and were felt to be too long. In addition, there was mostly no moderation or cityscape explanation. The traditional train is mainly used as a Christmas and Easter train as well as for charter trips.

A joint tour of the museum and the traditional train in the train set rarely occurred until 1997. The first examples were the traffic-historical weekend of 19/20. September 2007 and the jubilee tram rides in June 2008 on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the start of electrical operation between Erkner and Potsdam (June 11, 1928).

To reinforce the traditional train, a quarter train of the Wannseebahn type was used since Easter 1997 as it was in the mid-1970s (after the deadline in January 2009, it became the property of the Historic S-Bahn Association).

With the retirement of the class 475/875 in 1997, two quarter trains in the last operating condition were initially used for special trips. After the deadline in 2003, one of the quarter trains was taken out of service. The other received a general inspection in 2005 to enable it to be put back into operation and to adapt the technology to the traditional trains (including installation of a sound system) and has been part of the historic rolling stock ever since.

Since the mid-1990s, the traditional trains have been stored in the railcar hall (Twh) Hundekehle and the museum train in the Twh Erkner . After the closure of the Twh Erkner, the traditional trains were also brought there, along with several inoperable historical trains.

The half-train of the type 1937 was refurbished operationally from 1997, whereby the quarter-train ET / EB 167 072 was completed in 2000. The restoration of the other quarter train esT 3839 / es 6401 lasted until the end of 2001, which is why the entire half train was only officially handed over to special traffic on February 2, 2002. He drove until 2008/09 as a New Year's Eve train, on moonlight trips and for various charter missions. On September 4, 2004, esT 3839 became the registry office for a wedding.

The Panorama S-Bahn in Berlin's Ostbahnhof

With the commissioning of the Panorama-S-Bahn , the profile of the special trips with the historic trains changed, which in the meantime had been upgraded with a better sound system. Although the trains ran less now, shorter tours with moderation and management meant that the journeys retained their great popularity. In addition to the traditional Easter, Christmas and New Year's Eve missions, they were used at various special events, track anniversaries and openings as well as to order. With their larger seating capacity, the historic vehicles are predestined for charter trips for larger groups. (The panoramic train is limited to 65 seats; due to different technology, this special vehicle cannot be driven with any other in the formation.)

Due to the derailment accident on June 14, 2008 in the north-south tunnel near the Friedrichstrasse S-Bahn station with the EB 165 471 sidecar, it was finally revealed that some of the cars were tilted, which was due to incorrectly calculated springs in the bogies. Immediately before the outbreak of the so-called S-Bahn crisis in 2009 , the cars were parked until the cause was rectified; Since then, the workshop capacity has not been available for reconditioning, which is why they cannot be used for public trips or to order. As a result, the traditional Christmas and New Year's trains were also canceled. Most of the vehicles are parked in the Twh Erkner.
