15 km
In the eagerly awaited duel between Kuno Werner from Oberhof and Enno Röder from Klingenthal, who won Werner last year with a 17 advantage, Röder was just ahead after five kilometers. And with Werner Haase from Oberhofer, a third contender for the title joined the team in the meantime. Röder was able to keep up his pace and won his first individual title while Werner Haase was still in second place and somewhat surprisingly pushed Kuno Werner to bronze.

30 km
In the last race decision of the men, a victory from last year's champion Kuno Werner was expected. And after more than two thirds of the route, it looked like it was, Werner was ahead of Röder by over 40 seconds. But between kilometers 22 and 27 the lead melted down to 7 seconds. Since Röder crossed the finish line before Werner, he had to wait minutes for the race to end. In the end, Kuno Werner crossed the finish line with a lead of three seconds and was able to defend his title. The short running time was due to a redesign of the route, which meant that the route was no longer 30 kilometers.

50 km
The last championship decision took place as part of a winter sports festival on Altenberger Geisingberg , where there was also a ski jumping with all aces in the afternoon. The event got a special note after all athletes who were supposed to travel to Squaw Valley for the pre-Olympic competitions had now registered. But the US authorities refused entry to the GDR delegation because 8 of the 14 athletes were SED members. For communists, however, there was an entry ban in the USA at that time. 42 athletes competed in cross-country skiing, including Enno Röder and Kuno Werner, who were supposed to be in the USA. After 12.5 kilometers, Enno Röder was already 25 seconds ahead of Kuno Werner, confirming his good results from the ski championships. At the finish line, the lead for the new title holder Enno Röder was almost exactly one minute. Kuno Werner was runner-up ahead of the surprisingly strong Alfred Recknagel, who took bronze just 23 seconds behind Werner.

4 × 10 km relay
In bright sunshine, 12 squadrons started, three of them from Oberhof alone. After the first title for the Klingenthaler Röder, the duel Oberhof-Klingenthal was awaited with particular excitement. And after the first change, the Klingenthaler Lindenlaub also led. But Werner Haase, second runner from the first Oberhof representative, ran the best time of the day and changed with one and a half minutes before the Klingenthaler Stubenrauch. At the last change, the lead had increased to two minutes and the second Oberhof representative had moved up to second place. The final runner, Kuno Werner, took it easy in view of the reassuring lead and the decision that was still to be made over 30 kilometers and in the end crossed the finish line with a one-minute lead over the second Oberhof relay. The Klingenthal relay won bronze. The strength of the Oberhof cross-country skiers at that time was also reflected in the fact that even the third representative still took a good fifth place.

10 km
For the fifth time in a row Sonnhilde Kallus was able to win the individual distance. Renate Borges won silver this time after bronze last year. Bronze won a new face, the 18-year-old Christine Söldner from Oberwiesenthal. Olympian Elfried Spiegelhauer was beaten by her by seven seconds.

3 × 5 km relay
Already in the individual decision with the two podium places for Borges and Söldner it was shown that in the Oberwiesenthal relay there was serious competition for last year's champions from Klingenthal. And after the first change, the impression was confirmed that Söldner handed over to Christa Göhler with a 43-second lead. But she lost 29 seconds to Elfriede Spiegelhauer and in the last Kallus-Borges duel, Sonnhilde Kallus was already ahead after 12.5 kilometers. At the finish she ran out an impressive 50 seconds lead. The relay from Zella-Mehlis won bronze far behind.

Nordic combination
As part of the 15km cross-country skiing, the combined athletes also held their running competition. After that, runner-up Günter Flauger, who was just beaten last year, led with 240 points. Last year's champion Siegfried Böhme was 5.6 points behind in third place. But after a fall, Böhme had to bury his hopes for the title. Flauger, who also jumped the greatest distances, was able to celebrate his first championship title with a lead of over 13 points. Rainer Dietel, who was not yet in the front after the run, pushed himself up to the silver rank. The battle for bronze was also an exciting one, with medal winner Martin Körner only 0.5 points separating fourth-placed Manfred Meinhold.

Ski jumping
The ski jumping on the Marktiegelschanze , which was only inaugurated in December of the previous year, became the absolute highlight of the championship. 55,000 spectators flocked to the Henriettenthal in Lauscha to see the sovereign winner of the previous Four Hills Tournament, Helmut Recknagel, as well as last year's champion Harry Glaß and the three-time GDR champion Werner Lesser. After his defeat last year, Helmut Recknagel wanted to celebrate his first championship title. And with jumps of 82.5m and 82m he did it with ease. In the end he won by over ten points over Harry Glaß. Werner Lesser won bronze.

Honoring the athlete of the year
Following the ski jumping, the athletes of 1958 were honored, including for the first time the athlete of the year, swimmer Karin Beyer . The presence of the cyclist Täve Schur , who had already been honored five times and was extremely popular at the time and was re-elected, explains, among other things, the crowds.
Medal table
The SC Dynamo Klingenthal was the defining sports club of these championships with 5 titles. For the Oberhof army athletes there were only two titles in the end, Kuno Werner had to admit defeat twice a little surprisingly.
