The Mühlenstroth Small Steam Railway (DKBM) is a narrow-gauge small railway in Gütersloh operated by the association of the same name . The track is located on the site of a restaurant for excursions. The circular track system surrounds a meadow measuring around 240 meters by 280 meters, in the middle of which are the locomotive sheds and the wagon shed.

history

The association Dampf-Kleinbahn Mühlenstroth eV was founded in the summer of 1972. A group of railway enthusiasts from the Ruhr area had bought a 750 mm steam locomotive from a scrap dealer and refurbished it in their free time. With this locomotive she wanted to carry out hobby rides on an Austrian narrow-gauge railway , but this dream was dashed. While looking for a suitable application, a railroad friend in Gütersloh found a piece of land on which a railway line could be built, but only with a 600 mm gauge because of the narrow radii . So the locomotive had to be re-tracked. Over the next few months, a circle was built around the property with used rails and old sleepers cut in half.

On June 10, 1973, the first scheduled passenger train drove on the site. The first year of operation 1973 (with operation every weekend) brought a result of almost 17,000 passengers. Due to this success, the system was built as a museum railway in the style of a historic small railway in the following years .

Operation / vehicles

After the first locomotive was put into operation in 1973 together with three two-axle passenger cars built based on historical models , the second locomotive was refurbished by 1974. In the same year, two more locomotives from the GDR came to the DKBM. These were largely operational, so that by the end of 1974 the DKBM was able to present four steam locomotives.

However, this quick initial success also posed problems: It became clear that the DKBM had to improve the track, needed more passenger cars and urgently needed to provide storage space for the vehicles. The boxes of the first three cars were renewed using the frame construction and in 1975 the first four-axle vehicle was built in our own workshop. These four cars were the backbone for passenger traffic until 1980. In 1975, the depot located in the middle of the approximately circular track system was expanded and connected to the outer circle by a track triangle. In addition, a vehicle hall was built, giving at least the locomotives a roof over the boiler.

Through purchases in the GDR, the DKBM acquired numerous cars in 1977 and 1978, including some from the former network of the Mecklenburg-Pomerania narrow-gauge railway and another locomotive from the Muskau forest railway . Since then, more vehicles have been added and others have been given or lent, including to the Berlin Park Railway or the Muttental Railway ; however, the entire system is largely unchanged.
