Dandi is a village in the Navsari district in the Indian state of Gujarat . It is located on the Arabian Sea near the city of Navsari .
The village became known worldwide in 1930 as the destination of Mahatma Gandhi's salt march . He marched with 78 followers from his Sabarmati ashram near Ahmedabad to Dandi, 386 km away, where he picked up salt from the beach to protest against the British salt monopoly. The Salt March is widely considered to mark the beginning of the end of British rule over India .
