Daniel Defert (born September 10, 1937 ) is a French sociologist and AIDS activist.

Life

After finishing school, Defert studied sociology at the University of Clermont-Ferrand . After finishing his studies, Defert got a job as a professor at the University of Paris VIII . In 1984 he founded AIDES , the first organization in France to aim to raise public awareness of the disease, and was its first president until 1991.

The reason for his activities was the death of his partner Michel Foucault on June 25, 1984. In 2014 his memoirs Une vie politique appeared in the form of an interview book, a German partial translation appeared in 2015 under the title A political life . He is one of the editors of Foucault's works.
