Daniel Filipacchi (born January 12, 1928 in Paris ) is a French publisher, photographer and radio host. He was on the board of Hachette Filipacchi Médias , now part of the Groupe Lagardère .

Life

When school operations in France were interrupted with the invasion of the Wehrmacht , Daniel Filipacchi ended his school days early at the age of 13. He became an apprentice in an underground printing company. After the Second World War he worked as a freelance photographer for Paris Match, among others . He was interested in jazz and after a first radio broadcast on the death of Charlie Parker was a great success, he received the opportunity in 1955 from Europe 1 to host their own daily jazz radio program with his friend Frank Ténot , which was broadcast under the Title Pour ceux qui aiment le Jazz was broadcast. He then took over Jazz Magazine .

Daniel Filipacchi and Frank Téno organized tours of American jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong , Duke Ellington , Ella Fitzgerald , Erroll Garner and Thelonious Monk . Filipacchi also produced records - he founded Mood Records - and was a producer for RCA Records and Decca Records (including Sylvie Vartan ). In 1970 he was the founder and director of the Warner Music France label.

In the 1960s he created the very popular rock and roll radio show Salut les copains and decided to publish a magazine of the same name, which was also a great success. This was the beginning of his publishing empire, which soon included a wide variety of magazines, including the men's magazine Lui as well as the French editions of Penthouse and Playboy , the teenage magazine Mademoiselle Âge Tendre and specialist magazines such as Ski-Flash Magazin , Son Magazine ('Klangmagazin') , Photo , Mer et Moteur ('motor boating'), Décoration und Cuisine ('kitchen'). In 1976 he bought Paris Match magazine , whose circulation had decreased, and led it to renewed success.

In 1981 he and his friend and boss of the Lagardere group Jean-Luc Lagardère bought the Hachette Magazines group, which included a French television magazine ( Télé 7 jours ) and the women's magazine Elle . Von Elle founded his own editions for the United States and 25 other countries. With the acquisition of the US group Diamandis Communications (formerly CBS Magazines ) by Daniel Filipacchi and Jean-Luc Lagardère, expansion in the USA continued.

Daniel Filipacchi is a major collector of surrealist art. His collection and that of his friend Nesuhi Ertegün were presented in an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1999 . Filipacchi owns, among other things, the largest private collection of Joseph Cornell . He also published books on surrealist artists.

One of his three children (Craig, Mimi and Amanda) is the writer Amanda Filipacchi .
