Garbade is one of the Spanish post- expressionists who turned to pop art and comics during the Movida madrileña . His line is personal and minimalist. The writer Alvaro Pombo used the term "garbatear" for the first time. His portraits are melancholy and humorous, they show the human being at his core; Nobel laureate José Saramago described it as follows: “Garbade shows us humanity, where it unfolds and disguises itself.” His portraits of Nancy Cunard , Juan Carlos I , Rodriguez Zapatero , Kofi Annan and Pedro Almodovar are well known . His picture of the naked Pope Benedict XVI attracted attention in 2006 and was removed from his exhibition at the request of the Swiss embassy.

Commissioned by the Dadaists of Cabaret Voltaire , he designed the tombstone for the grave of Michail Bakunin in the Bremgarten cemetery , Bern .

In 1987 he participated in the publication of poetry as a co-founder of Signos magazine . In 2018 he was invited by PhotoEspaña to exhibit his work Heritage in Madrid. In the same year, the city of Toledo showed its exhibition En Cama con Greco y Picasso in the museum of the Church of San Sebastián .

Engagements

As an advocate for homosexual rights , he worked for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmfAR) against AIDS and the Fundation Triangulo in Madrid, where he illustrated texts in various writings such as Orientaciones. In the exhibition and the book Cosas de casados , he published his drawings on the subject of homosexuality in art together with David Hockney and Tom of Finland . He suggested the subject in the books La loca adventura de vivir , La pequeña muerte and Reload .

His wedding (2006) marked the first same-sex marriage in mascaraque.

With the writers Rafael Alberti , Vicente Molina Foix , José Saramago , Luis Antonio de Villena , Jesús Ferrero and Leopoldo Alas , he created the book Côctel and the exhibition of the same name on the subject of tolerance in 1996 in the monastery of San Ildefonso (Toledo) . The city of Toledo was chosen, in whose history Muslims , Christians and Jews lived together peacefully. The exhibition was supported by the Vice Director of UNESCO and the Swiss Embassy.

Since 1983 Garbade created impulses for the intercultural cooperation between Switzerland and Spain. He brought the first Swiss galleries to the ARCO art fair and cooperated in the Swiss Weeks of Madrid in 1988 at the side of Werner Bischof and John Armleder in the Museo Reina Sofia , Círculo de Bellas Artes and other galleries. In 2012 he was invited to the exhibitions Hispano-Suizo in Zurich , and in 2014 to Hispano-Suizo Madrid . As a curator, together with Nicole Herzog and Hugo Wirz, he directed the exhibition Desayuno para Inmigrantes on the immigration of Swiss artists in Spain . In 1989 he helped François Lachenal to the exhibition in Geneva: du Greco a Goya, a homage to the preservation of the works of the Museo del Prado during the Spanish Civil War .
