Daniel Gutwein

Daniel Gutwein (* 1951 in Dayton , Ohio ) is an American composer, saxophonist, shakuhachi player and music teacher.

Live and act

Gutwein played clarinet, saxophone and flute from the early 1960s and played jazz with the bands of Steve Murray and Tommy Dorsey and with the Berkshire Big Band in the 1970s . During the 1990s he performed occasionally with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow and the Harris Simon quartet . After 2000 he turned increasingly to Japanese music. He studied Shakuhachi with Ronnie Nyogetu Reishin Seldin and Yoshio Kurahashi and is a member of the Washington Toho Koto Society .

By 1974 Gutwein studied music education at Wright State University in his hometown. He continued his studies at the University of Cincinnati , where he received a Master of Music degree in 1976 and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1986. His teachers included T. Scott Huston , Norman Dinerstein , Paul M. Palombo and Lukas Foss . From 1978 to 1985 he taught at Williams College in Williamstown, after which he was Associate Professor at the College of William and Mary until 2004 , where he taught electronic music, music theory, composition and jazz history.

Gutwein emerged as a composer with electronic, chamber music and multimedia works. With the singer and poet Hermine Pinson he made live productions such as Marvin's Lament (1993) and Southland (1995). At Owl Recording appeared New Music for Synclavier II Digital Music System .
