Daniel Siemens
Daniel Siemens (* 1975 in Bielefeld ) is a German historian and professor of European history at the School of History, Classics and Archeology at Newcastle University in north-east England .
Life
Daniel Siemens studied history , literature and law from 1996 to 2002 at the University of Potsdam , the Université Paul Valéry / Montpellier III and the Free University of Berlin . In 2006 he received his doctorate from Wolfgang Hardtwig at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the thesis A popular expression of individuality: crime, justice and society in court reporting by daily newspapers in Berlin, Paris and Chicago, 1919 to 1933 . In the same year, the study was awarded the Franz Steiner Prize for Transatlantic History by the German Historical Institute in Washington DC and was published in 2007 under the title Metropolis and Crime .
In the fall of 2006, Siemens moved to the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology at Bielefeld University , where in 2007 he became a temporary academic advisor in the History of Modern Societies department headed by Thomas Welskopp . In 2009 Siemens published the monograph Horst Wessel . Death and Transfiguration of a National Socialist in the Siedler Verlag . The book received a lot of media coverage and was a. Discussed by the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Zeit , der Welt , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung as well as on 3sat and Deutschlandradio . The German Book Trade Association awarded the book the “ Humanities International ” prize in 2010 . An English translation was published in 2013 under the title The Making of a Nazi Hero: The Murder and Myth of Horst Wessel by IB Tauris, London. It was named one of the best history books of 2013 by BBC History Magazine.
From 2011 to 2014, Siemens was DAAD Francis L. Carsten Lecturer at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) , University College London (UCL) before returning to Bielefeld University . Siemens was also a visiting professor at the University of Bologna and Peking University as well as a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) and a Fellow at the Leibnitz Center for Contemporary History Potsdam eV
After completing his habilitation in January 2017 at Bielefeld University, Siemens was appointed private lecturer and elected to the board of the Center for Theories in Historical Research at Bielefeld University. For October 2017, he took a reputation of Newcastle University on a chair for European history at. In the same month his book Stormtroopers: A New History of Hitler's Brownshirts was published by Yale University Press , which is now also available in German, Polish and Chinese translation and as a special edition of the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Saxon State Center for Civic Education . In 2020 Siemens published the book What should become of us? Together with Regina Grundmann and Bernd J. Hartmann . On the history of the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith in National Socialist Germany .
