Daniel Yergin (born February 6, 1947 ) is an American author and economist.

education

The historian and economist taught politics and economics at Cambridge University and was editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. He is considered an authority on international politics and economics.

Journalistic activity

In 1991 Yergin published "The Prize - The Hunt for Oil, Money and Power" (German Frankfurt 1991, original title "Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power"), an internationally recognized standard work on the history of petroleum, and received for it the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for the best non-fiction book. Yergin has also attended various U.S. government hearings on oil and energy issues.

Positions

As early as 2008, Yergin did not consider the global oil production peak to be an acute or serious problem. According to him, the high oil prices at the time were more due to the lack of capacity in the industry than to geological aspects. Only in the long run does he see the dominance of oil as an all-encompassing energy source slowly dwindling due to increasing fuel efficiency.

Yergin's predictions and assurances about the future of world oil supplies have been widely criticized. For example, Jean Laherrere has argued that Yergin's predictions of energy production and prices were neglecting fundamental facts and drawing incorrect conclusions.

In 2014, in a study carried out on behalf of a number of German companies, IHS came to the conclusion that the current design of the so-called energy transition is endangering Germany's competitiveness. Yergin explained further conclusions, among other things in an interview in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , according to which it makes sense to promote more domestic natural gas in Germany using shale gas technology and to maintain the green electricity discounts for industry. The energy transition is based on the false assumption that energy prices will rise worldwide. The opposite is the case, especially in Germany, the green electricity surcharges lead to a distortion of competition that is harmful to exports.

Entrepreneur

Yergin is CEO of CERA (Cambridge Energy Research Associates), an American consulting firm specializing in the energy market , industrial trends , geopolitics and industrial strategy. The company with - according to its own statements - currently employs 200 people, was founded in 1983 by Yergin and James Rosenfield and acquired by Information Handling Services (IHS Energy) in 2004 , but continues to operate as CERA. Every year Yergin organizes a high-level conference (CERA Week) in Houston, Texas, through CERA .
