Daniele Bennati (born September 24, 1980 in Arezzo ) is a former Italian cyclist .
Athletic career
After Bennati won a stage in the U23 stage race Giro delle Regioni in 2001, he switched to the Italian cycling team Acqua & Sapone-Cantina Tollo in 2002 and won his first international races in the elite category that year with stages of the Tour of Austria and the Regio Tour .
In the years that followed, Bennati developed into a successful sprinter, winning in particular eleven stages of the “Grand Tours” and also winning the points at the Vuelta a España 2007 and the Giro d'Italia 2008 . In the second half of his career, he increasingly provided helper services , particularly in positioning the team captains. With the Tinkoff-Saxo team , he took on the role of the capitaine de la route , i.e. the driver who leads the team in the race in the interests of the winning drivers - at Tikoff especially Alberto Contador . He took on the same role from the 2017 season on the Movistar Team for Nairo Quintana .
In April 2019, Bennati fell and suffered a vertebral fracture, which resulted in his being unable to participate in racing due to back pain. At the end of the year, he announced the end of his racing career, during which he won a total of 53 international competitions, including 22 at the UCI ProTour and UCI WorldTour level . He competed in 25 Grand Tours and took part in 29 cycling monuments .
