Daniel Moses Barker (born January 13, 1909 in New Orleans ; † March 13, 1994 ) was an American banjo player, singer, composer, guitarist, ukulele player and band leader of traditional jazz.

Life

The nephew of the drummer Paul Barbarin first took clarinet lessons from Barney Bigard . After he jumped in as a banjo player in Kid Rena's band , he took lessons on this instrument from Lorenzo Stall from Buddy Bolden's band . In 1930 he moved to New York City , where he switched to guitar and in 1938 played in Benny Carter's big band , Lucky Millinder and from 1939 to 1949 in Cab Calloway's . From 1947 he played on the Jazz on the River weekend trips on the Hudson River and with other "veterans" during the New Orleans Revival of that time. He took u. a. with Jelly Roll Morton , Baby Dodds , James P. Johnson , Sidney Bechet , Mezz Mezzrow and Red Allen , and in 1945 in a session with Sir Charles Thompson even with Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon . In 1960 he played at the Newport Jazz Festival with Eubie Blake . In 1965 he moved back to New Orleans, where he accompanied his wife, the singer Blue Lu Barker , led parades (as Grand Marshal of the Congo Brass Band ), played a leading role in Mardi Gras (in 1994 as King of Krewe de Vieux ) or with the He played the Fairview Baptist Church Christian Band , in which the young Wynton Marsalis and his brother Branford Marsalis also played and which, according to former band member Joe Torregano, "saved jazz for a generation in New Orleans". He has also given lectures on traditional jazz, commented on radio and TV, and was assistant curator of the New Orleans Jazz Museum . He also wrote memoirs and two books on early jazz and New Orleans jazz.

In 1991 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship .

He was married to the blues singer Blue Lu Barker .

On March 13, 1994 Danny Barker died at the age of 85 years in New Orleans to cancer .
