Danso , also tanso , is a rim-blown bamboo notch flute that is played in Korean music. It has also been made of plastic since the 20th century .
The 39 to 40 centimeters long danso has four finger holes and a thumb hole on the back. The range is over two octaves from gb 1 to a flat 3 . It is related to the Chinese xiao , which appears in China in the 1st century AD, while the danso in Korea was probably only introduced in the early 19th century.
The flute is used in ensembles of quiet chamber music together with string instruments or as a soloist, but not in ritual music ( aak ) and not in Chinese music ( tangak ). In folk music, playing with the mouth organ saenghwang is popular. The danso is considered easy to learn and is used as a school instrument in Korea.
The name of the instrument is made up of dan , "short", and so , "flute". A similar Korean flute, the tungso , is longer than the danso .
