The script was written by Gerhard Menzel . The main roles are occupied by Paula Wessely , Erich Auer , Heinrich Schweiger , Albert Rueprecht and Waltraud Haas . The film takes place shortly after World War II. The married couple Joseph and Käthe Zeller live with their children Felix, Paul, Walter and Franziska on an Austrian estate. During a family outing, the father steps on a tell mine and is fatally injured. When arranging his legacy, Käthe realizes that her husband did not manage to do well. With the rest of her money she moves to Vienna with the children and buys a small laundry there.

Nine years later, the small cellar shop has become a large laundry. Paul's reckless test of courage from childhood has resulted in the now big boy going blind over the past few years. Käthe instructs her son Felix to marry the laundry girl Martina after she became pregnant by him. The spoiled Walter, who spends his nights as a musician in bars, is rejected with a heavy heart so that he can finally become independent. Franzi experiences her first lovesickness and is comforted by her mother.

In order to save her son Paul from lifelong blindness, Käthe donates the cornea of ​​an eye as part of a dangerous operation. In the end, all children find their way back to their beloved mother full of gratitude and humility.

The same material was filmed in 1939 by director Gustav Ucicky under the title Mother's Love. The remake was made in the studio in Vienna-Sievering. The exterior shots come from Vienna and the surrounding area. The buildings were designed by the film architect Felix Smetana . The fashion designer Fred Adlmüller contributed the costumes.
