Dasypogon melanopterus is a fly from the family of predatory flies (Asilidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 18 to 26 millimeters and have a slim build. The males are usually completely black, in the females the tergites on the abdomen are more or less strongly colored red. The mustache is black, the wings of both males and females are strongly tinted black. The thighs and rails of the females can be colored red except for black ends.
Occurrence and way of life
The species is widespread in Southern Europe and Asia Minor, in Central Europe it occurs only in places with favorable temperatures. The animals colonize warm, sandy and stony habitats and hunt their prey, especially small flies, in the herb layer or on the ground.
