David P. "Dave" Hunter (born January 1, 1958 in Petrolia , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played over 800 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League . The left winger spent most of his career with the Oilers, with whom he first appeared in the World Hockey Association and won the Stanley Cup after moving to the NHL in 1984 , 1985 and 1987 .

Career

Dave Hunter played in his youth for the Petrolia Jets in his hometown, before he moved to the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League , the highest junior division in his home province, for the 1975/76 season . During his junior years he took part with the Canadian U20 national team in the Junior World Championship in 1977 and won the silver medal there with the team. In the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 he was selected in 17th position by the Canadiens de Montréal after he had scored 44 goals and assists in 68 games for Sudbury in the past season. In June 1978, however, the Edmonton Oilers from the World Hockey Association (WHA) equipped him with a contract, so that the winger was initially in the WHA instead of in the National Hockey League (NHL). His first season in the competitive league of the NHL also marked the last, so he moved to the NHL with the Oilers, where Edmonton secured his player rights from Montréal as part of the NHL Expansion Draft 1979 .

As a result, Hunter was active for the Oilers in the NHL for over eight years and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the playoffs in 1984 , 1985 and 1987 . He was valued for his physical style of play, he recorded more than 100 penalty minutes in three seasons, but also scored better offensive statistics than the classic enforcers of the team. In the 1983/84 season he achieved 48 scorer points from 80 games, the best of his career. In the fourth playoff success that Edmonton celebrated in 1988, the Canadian no longer had a share, since he was given in November 1987 in a multi-player swap to the Pittsburgh Penguins . With him, the future Hall of Famer Paul Coffey and Wayne Van Dorp moved to Pittsburgh, while the Oilers received Craig Simpson , Dave Hannan , Moe Mantha and Chris Joseph .

With the Penguins Hunter ended the season before he was transferred back to Edmonton in October 1988 to compensate for the fact that the Penguins Dave Hannan signed in the NHL Waiver Draft from the Oilers. Also via the Waiver Draft, he got to the Winnipeg Jets on the same day , where he was only active for a few months, before he returned to the Oilers for a third time in January 1989 - this time via the Waiver . There the attacker ended his active career after the 1988/89 season, in which he had completed a total of 851 games and recorded 363 points scorer and 1127 penalty minutes.
