John David Gaskell (born October 5, 1940 in Orrell ) is a former English football goalkeeper . He won the English Cup with Manchester United in 1963 , after playing in the Charity Shield game against local rivals City in 1956 as a 16-year-old . Usually, however, he did not get beyond the role of the substitute behind regular keepers like Harry Gregg or Alex Stepney .

Athletic career

Gaskell was discovered by Manchester United's talent scouts when he was in goal for the youth team at his home club Orrell St Luke's . He joined the other up-and-coming players from "United", who have also been used for handyman jobs at the local Old Trafford Stadium . So on October 24, 1956 and after his work was done, he wanted to watch his club's game in the English Supercup - the Charity Shield - in the stadium of local rivals Manchester City . When United's goalkeeper Ray Wood injured himself and then field player Duncan Edwards also got rid of the gloves that had been put on in the meantime, Gaskell stepped out of the stands into the limelight. The "stopgap" ultimately led to success and Gaskell even left the 1-0 without conceding a goal.

He made his league debut a year later, but in the 3: 4 at home against Tottenham Hotspur on November 30, 1957 , he was just as unlucky as in his other appearances in the 1957/58 season against Portsmouth (3: 3) and the Wolverhampton Wanderers (0-4). The fact that he was not part of the squad that left for the European Cup match in Belgrade in February 1958 was fortunate, so he was not one of the fatalities in the Munich plane crash . In the period that followed, it was used more frequently in the first half of the 1960s, but was mostly only “second choice” after Harry Gregg . Gaskell was considered athletic and acrobatic, but he occasionally showed weaknesses when controlling the penalty area, especially when opposing crosses, which also included injury problems. He experienced his sporting climax in 1963 when he was in the final of the FA Cup , whereby this decision against Gregg was quite controversial. Despite this, Manchester United won the final 3-1.

The signing of Pat Dunne in May 1964 ensured that Gaskell only "third choice" and after both competitors left the club in 1966, this changed little in his standing, as he had goalkeepers of equal value with Alex Stepney and Jimmy Rimmer in the way. He made only a marginal contribution to winning the two English championships ( 1965 and 1967 ) and the 1968 European Cup . Gaskell's reputation was also tarnished in the club management because he was still active in rugby for his home club in Orrell due to his poor sporting prospects. In the 1968/69 season he played in the Northern Premier League for Wigan Athletic before he left Manchester in June 1969 for the fourth division AFC Wrexham .

Gaskell rose to the third division with Wrexham in his first year and stayed there for a total of three years before ending his professional career in England due to an injury. A short time later he moved to South Africa, where he stood between the posts for the Arcadia Shepherds .
