David George Patrick Coke Ogilvy, 8th (or 13th) Earl of Airlie , KT , GCVO , PC (born May 17, 1926 ) is a Scottish nobleman , politician and landowner.

Life

He is the eldest son of David Ogilvy, 7th (or 12th) Earl of Airlie , and Lady Alexandra Coke . Sir Angus Ogilvy , the now deceased husband of Princess Alexandra , was his younger brother.

Born in London, he attended Eton College and served in the Scots Guards during World War II . He remained in the military until 1950. After he left, he attended the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester to learn more about agricultural property management. The family's two residences, Cortachy Castle and Airlie Castle , are on the family's estate in Angus , which is 280 square kilometers . The Earl also has a townhouse in Chelsea , London .

In 1952 he married Dame Virginia Fortune Ryan , DCVO , the daughter of the American multimillionaire John Barry Ryan and his wife Margaret Kahn, whose father was the financier Otto Kahn . The marriage resulted in six children:

  • Lady Doune Mabell Ogilvy (born 1953);
  • Lady Jane Fortune Margaret Ogilvy (born 1955);
  • David John Ogilvy, Lord Ogilvy (born 1958);
  • Hon. Bruce Patrick Mark Ogilvy (born 1959);
  • Lady Elizabeth Clementine Ogilvy (born 1965);
  • Hon. Patrick Alexander Ogilvy (* 1971).

After a riding accident that made it impossible to continue working as a landowner, he began working for the traditional investment bank Schroders in 1953 , where he quickly rose to management. In 1961 he became director , 1973 chairman of the board , and in 1977 he moved to the holding company as chairman of the board .

When his father died in 1968, he inherited his title of nobility, which had been linked to a seat in the House of Lords since the 1963 Peerage Act . Through the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost the hereditary right to a seat in parliament.

In 1984 he ended his activities as a bank manager to take over the traditional office of Lord Chamberlain of the Household , the highest official at the British royal court. His father had already held the corresponding office with Queen Elisabeth, the Queen Mother . He served Queen Elizabeth II in this office for more than 13 years until the end of 1997.

He is also Lord Lieutenant of Angus and Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers . In the latter capacity he holds the office of Gold Stick for Scotland . His wife serves the British Queen as Lady of the Bedchamber .

Sometimes he is called the 13th Earl of Airlie instead of the 8th. The difference arises from the fact that some ancestors, who were deprived of the title and therefore did not bear the title during their lifetime, are counted.

Orders and decorations

In 1984 he was accepted as a Knight Grand Cross in the Royal Victorian Order and in 1985 as a knight in the Thistle Order . Since 2007 he has also been Chancellor of the Thistle Order. In 1990 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and in 1997 the Royal Victorian Chain .
