David S. Creamer

David Staley Creamer (born September 3, 1858 in Belmont County , Ohio , † November 17, 1946 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Ohio Treasurer of State from 1909 to 1913 .

Political career

One of his childhood role models was Ross J. Alexander. Creamer's first political experience was when Alexander was running for a seat in Congress . He drove a horse-drawn sleigh where voters were sitting inside. Creamer's early political career began with his election as school principal. Then he worked as a township clerk in Mead Township (Belmont County). Creamer was on the Township Democratic Committee. He also served as the manager of the Belmont Agricultural Association for three years . In 1892 he accepted the post of recorder from Belmont County, an office many people considered impracticable. He did a fine job and was re-elected in 1894. On June 1, 1906, he accepted the appointment to State Fire Marshall . His tenure fell in the first half of the reign of then Ohio Governor John M. Pattison . The Democratic Party nominated Creamer in April 1908 for the office of Treasurer of State of Ohio. The only other Democratic candidate on the electoral list was then Ohio Governor Judson Harmon . Creamer was then elected Treasurer of State in the subsequent 1909 election and re-elected in 1911. He held the post between January 1909 and January 1913. Ohio Governor Frank B. Willis appointed Creamer to the Ohio State Board of Administration about two years later, in March 1915 . This agency served 22 Ohio state institutions. After the end of his political career, Creamer lived in Columbus, Ohio, where he worked in the real estate business and was elected City Treasurer in 1930 .

Private life

David Staley Creamer, son of Amanda Masters (1835–1867) and David Jackson Creamer (1829–1911), was born on the family homestead in Key, Ohio , about three years before the outbreak of civil war . His grandfather, the original David Creamer (1777-1865), bought the homestead. He settled in Belmont County in 1815 and was one of the first settlers there. David Staley Creamer had an older brother, Zadock, and two younger sisters, Emma and Carrie. Creamer lost his mother when he was just eight years old. Thereafter, his father married Margaret Haines in 1869.

David Staley Creamer married Gertrude Rebecca Fowler (1874–1944) on October 16, 1890 in Bellaire (Ohio). The couple had four children: Lorena Verdell, Effie Marie, David Harold and Genevieve Fowler. One of the six grandchildren was Kenneth D. McClure (1921-2000), the future mayor of Bexley (Ohio). Creamer lived the rest of his life in Columbus, Ohio, where he died in 1946 at the age of 88. He was then buried in the family grave at Union Cemetery in St. Clairsville, Ohio .
