David Teniers (baptized December 15, 1610 in Antwerp , † April 25, 1690 in Brussels ) was a Flemish painter , draftsman and curator . He was an extremely versatile artist known for his extensive production. He was a innovator in a variety of genres such as history painting , genre painting , landscape, portrait, and still life. He is best remembered today as the leading Flemish genre painter of his time. Life

In 1637 he married Anna Brueghel, a daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder. Ä. ; Best man was Rubens. Teniers' son of the same name, David Teniers III. (* July 10, 1638; † February 11, 1685) did not gain the fame of his father. In his work as a tapestry painter, his importance lies in the field of decorative tapestry .

Teniers was appointed court painter to Brussels in 1651 . As such, he was in charge of the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm . For this he created the “ Theatrum pictorium ” in 1660 , the first ever illustrated catalog of a painting collection.

In 1664 he founded the Antwerp Academy , where young artists were trained in drawing and sculpture. It was hoped that the academy could help revive Flemish art, which had seen a sharp decline after the deaths of leading Flemish artists Rubens and Anthony van Dyck.

David Teniers the Elder J. was very productive in the almost 80 years of his life, hundreds of his works have been preserved, they hang in almost every well-known picture gallery. His genre scenes were extremely popular with collectors of the time.

Teniers created, among other things, rural pub scenes with drinkers, smokers and card players in addition to motifs such as folk festivals, soldiers ' guard rooms , alchemists - and witches' kitchens - a total of around 800 pictures. The Temptations of St. Anthony form a large part of his oeuvre , of which an estimated 100 to 200 versions exist - attributed to Teniers and his students.

Teniers is the most prolific of the Flemish peasant painters, who, however, differed from his fellow artists in a more moderate, less coarse and relaxed view of peasant pleasures. His pictures are characterized by cozy humor, a rich, well-thought-out composition, a bright, fresh color that sometimes touches the colorful, by witty characteristics and fresh liveliness of the presentation. In addition to peasant dances, village fair fairs, brawls and tavern scenes, he painted genre-like scenes from the Bible, fantastic scenes such as the temptation of St. Anthony, alchemists in their laboratories, guard rooms with soldiers, animal pieces (monkeys, cats, etc.) that parody people's activities. ), Landscapes with figures and the like. Initially painting in a strong, brownish tone, in his heyday he adopted a warm gold tone, which has been replaced by a fine silver tone since around 1650.
