Day of the Painter is an American short film directed by Robert P. Davis from 1960 that won an Oscar .

content

The film presents itself as a high-spirited, very comical parody, which has abstract - expressionist painting as its theme and is called "Painter's Day". It all begins when a painter wakes up in a slowly crumbling hut on a rickety pier, located on a picturesque river. A boat approaches and brings him his Wall Street Journal , from which the man concludes that his stocks are doing well. He sets about loading a wheelbarrow with cans of various colors, long sticks, and a spray gun. Two helpers also carry a large blank canvas onto his muddy “studio”, which is on the side of the stream. Then the painter is busy all day filling the canvas in every imaginable way by scattering, shooting and even pushing himself across the canvas. Little by little, an image actually emerges that turns out to be quite good and resembles Jackson Pollock's paintings , natural and attractive to those who appreciate imitative work. After the painter has finished, he looks at his work and then cuts the enormous canvas into pieces.

At the end of the day a small seaplane comes by, the pilot carefully examines the cut segments and then selects one, puts it in his plane and flies away. The painter, meanwhile, takes the remaining pieces and throws them into the river, where they swim away with the swans, accompanied by seagulls.
