Dean Clement Evason (born August 22, 1964 in Flin Flon , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played 858 games for the Washington Capitals , Hartford Whalers , San Jose Sharks during his playing career between 1980 and 1999 , Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Evason celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the gold medal at the 1997 World Cup . Since June 2018 he has been assistant coach of the Minnesota Wild from the NHL, where he took over the role of head coach on an interim basis in February 2020.
Career
Evason first played in the 1980/81 season in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League with the Cowichan Valley Capitals. At the end of the season he moved to the Western Hockey League , where he ran up until 1984 for the Spokane Flyers and Kamloops Junior Oilers . In his senior year he was named to the league's West First All-Star team.
After the center had already been selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round in the fifth round in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft , they took him to the end of the 1983/84 season and used him in two season games. The following season Evason spent between the farm team , which belonged to the American Hockey League , and the NHL squad of the Caps, before he was transferred to the Hartford Whalers in March 1985 . There he belonged to the NHL regular team until the end of the 1990/91 season and played his best year in the 1986/87 season with 59 points from 80 games. In October 1991, the Canadian moved to the newly founded San Jose Sharks in exchange for Dan Keczmer , where he stayed for two years. Further transfers to the Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames followed .
For the 1996/97 season, he joined the Canadian national team , but also ran in three games for the EV train from the Swiss National League A in. After his stay with the national team, he went to the German Ice Hockey League at EV Landshut for the 1997/98 season , where he ended his career after the 1998/99 season.
After the end of his active career Evason took over for the 1999/00 season the post of head coach with the Kamloops Blazers from the Western Hockey League, which he occupied until the end of the 2001/02 season. This was followed by a one-year engagement as head coach with the Vancouver Giants in the 2002/03 game year. During the 2004/05 season he worked as an assistant coach for the Calgary Hitmen , who, like Kamloops and Vancouver, were based in the WHL. From the 2005/06 season he was assistant coach with the Washington Capitals in the NHL. First he assisted head coach Glen Hanlon , later he supported his successor Bruce Boudreau . For the 2012/13 season he was hired by the Milwaukee Admirals from the American Hockey League as head coach.
As a result, Evason worked in Milwaukee for six years until he returned to the NHL as an assistant coach for the 2018/19 season when he was signed by the Minnesota Wild . There he took over the role of head coach on an interim basis in February 2020 after Bruce Boudreau's dismissal .
International
Evason first played at the Junior World Championship in 1984 for the Canadian national team , but only reached fourth place. Spent with the senior national team Evason the entire 1996/97 season with the exception of three games for the EV train from the Swiss National League A . This also included participation in the 1997 World Cup , where the team won the gold medal.
