Content profile
With the exception that the Communist Party of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan , there was no democratization within the party .
The party leaders of the Democratic Party remained the political leadership of the party even after the independence of Turkmenistan, but are currently nationalist and not, as before, communist. In terms of content, the party is only considered a presidential party and can therefore be classified as authoritarian despite its name .
history
The Democratic Party of Turkmenistan emerged from the Communist Party of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic . After the failed August putsch in Moscow in 1991 , Saparmyrat Nyýazow dissolved the Communist Party in the now independent Turkmenistan and founded the Democratic Party in its place and under his leadership . Its chairman was Nyýazow. In the parliamentary elections in Turkmenistan in 1994 , the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan received almost all the votes cast nationwide and thus had all 50 members of the newly established parliament of Turkmenistan. In the next parliamentary election in Turkmenistan in 1999 , the Democratic Party was again able to provide all delegates in parliament.
Since the beginning of 2006 it has been the only permitted party in Turkmenistan, the only (apparent) opposition party, the Peasant Justice Party , has been banned. Turkmenistan thus became a one-party state . Although the new Turkmen constitution of September 2008 allows the formation of parties, the DP has so far remained the only political party.
