Denis Gougeon

Denis Gougeon (born November 16, 1951 in Granby, Québec ) is a Canadian composer.

Gougeon studied musicology and guitar at the École Vincent-d'Indy . He then took private composition lessons from André Prévost and later from Serge Garant . He received the Canadian Composers Association Prize in 1977, second prize in the CBC's Young Composers Competition in 1980, and the William St Clair Low Award from the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (CAPAC) the following year.

He taught at the University of Montreal from 1985 to 1988 and was visiting professor of composition at McGill University from 1986–87 . In 1989 he was appointed composer in residence of the Orchester symphonique de Montréal . From 1982 to 1990 he was a member of the society for avant-garde music Les Événements du neuf .

Gougeon composed a large number of commissioned works (including for the percussionist Marie-Josée Simard , the Orchester Métropolitain , the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec , the Vancouver New Music Society and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra ). As a member of the Groupe des sisses (alongside Walter Boudreau , Michel-Georges Brégent , Michel Gonneville , Alain Lalonde and John Rea ) he took part in several of the group's compositions.

Gougeon is married to the soprano Marie-Danielle Parent .
