Denis van Berchem

Denis van Berchem (born December 19, 1908 in Eaux-Vives, today Geneva , † May 7, 1994 in Collonge-Bellerive ) was a Swiss ancient historian .

Denis van Berchem, son of the historian Victor van Berchem and his wife Isabelle Naville, daughter of Édouard Naville , studied at the University of Geneva and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris . In 1939 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . From 1939 to 1948 he was professor of Latin language and literature at the University of Lausanne and from 1949 to 1951 at the University of Geneva. From 1956 to 1963 he was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Basel and from 1963 to 1976 at the University of Geneva, where he was also Rector from 1966 to 1969. Denis van Berchem has published on Roman and Greek antiquity, the Orient and Switzerland in Roman times.
