The Daredevil of Boston (original title: In Old California ; in Germany also known as California Gold Rush ) is an American western from 1942 starring John Wayne . The California gold rush forms the framework for action .

California around 1848: The young pharmacist Tom Craig from Boston wants to open a pharmacy in Sacramento . On the way there he meets the singer Lacey Miller and her fiancé Britt Dawson, who is doing very shady business. Since Craig openly doubts Dawson's honesty, Dawson throws him overboard.
Arriving in Sacramento, Craig finds out that Dawson is the leader of a gang that controls the entire city and the surrounding area. Only Lacey Miller, who fell in love with Craig, dares to rent him a shop. When Craig gets the farmers to stand up against Dawson's gang, Dawson tries to kill him. However, Lacey threatens to abandon him if he should harm Craig. Unable to lay hands on him himself, Dawson poisoned Craig's medicine with an overdose of laudanum . In fact, a man dies of the poisoned medicine and, as Dawson had hoped, the angry people want to lynch Craig for it . Fortunately for him, a rider arrives at this moment to report the gold discovery to Sutter's Mill . Craigs escapes the strand, but his reputation is ruined - he has to close his pharmacy.
Meanwhile, a typhoid epidemic has broken out in the gold fields and the doctor lacks the necessary medication. Craig manages to put together a trek to bring the medicines and other necessary relief supplies that have arrived from San Francisco to the gold fields. Britt Dawson wants to steal this shipment and sell it to the prospectors at high prices. Dawson is shot dead by his own brother in an argument and his gang is wiped out. So Craig reaches the gold fields with the trek and can stop the epidemic.
