The special attraction of the city is the zoo with the African lion somewhere . Every week, vet Doc comes to the zoo and examines the lion. But once he forgets to lock the lion cage again. The lion takes advantage of the new freedom and sets off for the city. The news The lion is loose is quickly making the rounds of the small town. The residents are scared and hide in their houses. Postman brand still quickly delivers his mail. Mrs. Wißtihrschon and sisters Kim and pips out of it. The little girl Pips is playing in the garden, and when the young Italian Tralala invites them, they go on an excursion. Tralala is not afraid of the lion, because he supposedly knows a saying that lions give paws to . Kim and others begin a search for her.

In a pitfall into which he fell, Leo meets Pips , who befriends him. There she is found by the search party with her brother Kim , Tralala and Totokatapi , who has come from Africa to catch the lion. In the end, the vet Doc comes back and wants to bring the lion back to the zoo. On the way there you will pass the drawbridge again. When the bridge keeper Dreipfennig sees the lion, he jumps into the river in fear. Leo wants to save him, but ends up in Totokatapi's boat (a washtub) and drifts inexorably towards the sea towards Africa. The raven Ra finally saves Dreipfennig from the river.

2. The storm

Uncle Guckaus and Uncle Schluckauf from the lighthouse island invite the siblings Kim and Pips over to their lighthouse over the holidays. The children take their tomcat Schipp with them. One day Ka , a clipped cockatoo, ends up in a wooden box on the beach. The children discover him and make friends with him. When Ka Schipp wants to show how he got into the box, he drifts out to sea again. The siblings Kim and Pips , accompanied by Schipp and the goat Zie , set out on a rescue operation. The Seagull Mo , the first lion and then Ka has taken on the sea, explored above. Ka gets into a heavy storm.

3. The cockatoo in distress

The cockatoo is the first to land on the island. A sign has been put up there that reads: “Parrot eater island, parrots are strongly advised against entering the island. The Animal Welfare Association ". Ka does not pay attention to the sign and a short time later she is caught by the two natives (still called negroes in the first edition of the book ) Nenepapa and Nenemama . They are already thinking about the best parrot recipe for Ka - No. 92: "Roasted on a skewer until crispy, twisted for two hours, filled with pineapple ...". The sick daughter Nenekiki should get well again quickly. Ka complains, “I'm not a parrot, I'm a cockatoo!” However, that doesn't help him much. To gain time, he pretends to be a doctor. Nenekiki gets a runny nose from his cold compress , which annoys the parents even more.

The siblings Kim and Pips , who met lions on the way and took them in tow, land with the other animals on the parrot eater island, discover the captured Ka and come up with a plan: is painted brightly and secretly exchanged for Ka . The plan almost fails because Mö is locked up. Pips left to make Nenekiki healthy save her. Meanwhile, Kim , Ka , Zie and Schipp arrive at the boat. But Nenemama and Nenepapa stole the sail and are demanding Ka in exchange for it . He tries to wake Leo , who had accidentally taken sleeping pills before, because Nemama and Nenepapa also want to eat Kim , Pips , Schipp and Zie . Leo wakes up when he hears that pips are about to be eaten and pounces on Nenemama and Nenepapa . Since Pips is not there, Leo mistakenly believes that she has already been eaten and wants to devour the parrot- eaters when Pips comes to the beach with Nenekiki , who has cured her with pills. Now Nenemama and Nenepapa give up and promise their daughter, who is healthy again thanks to Pips , that she will never eat parrots again. At a feast, Nenepapa declares the island to be a parrot keeper island. Ka stays there.

4. The Sultan in the Pit

Doc and the children learn from the newspaper that their lion is drifting towards Sultania in the sea . There is already panic there and the sultan wants to hunt the lion. So Doc , Kim , Pips and the poodle Wu fly there without further ado. The evil grand vizier plans to overthrow the sultan with a handful of conspirators. The poodle Wu overhears the conspirators and warns the Sultan. Nevertheless, the conspirators manage to capture the sultan with his own trapdoor. They throw him to eat the lion that has already been caught.

5. Leo well, all well

Although Leo is starved, he spares the Sultan when he hears that he is friends with Pips. His wise but over-anxious camel is also thrown into the lions' den. The siblings Kim and Pips succeed in liberating the sultan. The evil Grand Vizier has meanwhile had Doc , who had put on the sultan's clothes to hide the disappearance of the sultan and to avoid panic, kidnapped in order to abuse him as a scapegoat against the people by portraying him as the mastermind of the conspiracy. However, Doc is able to escape by hypnotizing and imprisoning the Grand Vizier while he escapes wearing the Grand Vizier's clothes. When Leo mistakenly confuses him with the Grand Vizier, Doc is saved by the others. From now on the lion is allowed to live freely in Sultania.

characters

The main characters

Despite the title, Leo is more of a minor character; the main characters are the siblings Kim and Pips , with whom he is friends. He gets along particularly well with pips and cares about them, so he rushes at the parrot-eaters when he hears that pips are to be eaten and spares the sultan whom the traitorous Grand Weissr has accused him of eating when he hears that he's a friend of pips . In the end he almost eats the disguised Doc , whom he confuses with the Grand Vizier. Often times, Pips ignores her brother's warnings and goes to dangerous places where she mostly makes friends, like Leo or Nenekiki . Nothing is known about the children's parents. Uncle Guckaus , a lighthouse keeper and father Hiccup , a fisherman, live on the lighthouse island, where "Hiccup" is nobody's father, but is just called that.

Doc is the vet who accidentally allowed the lion to escape. He later travels to Sultania with Kim and Pips to save him. In addition to his skills as a veterinarian, he is a good hypnotist, which enables him to escape from the dungeon of the grand vizier.

Ka is a trimmed cockatoo who hid in a box for fear of its owner and was washed up on the beach on the lighthouse island. However, it soon drifts out to sea again and is almost fried by the natives on parrot-eater island. After his friends saved him and the island was renamed "Parrot Keeper Island", he stayed with Nenekiki .

The sultan is the ruler of the oriental kingdom of Sultania. His closest adviser (next to the Grand Vizier) is a wise but fearful camel who tells him about a dream about a conspiracy right from the start. Unfortunately, Kamel couldn't see who the conspirators were, as it was woken up at that very moment - ironically, by the Grand Vizier, the leader of the conspirators. Kamel had dreamed that the Sultan would be overthrown from the minaret and from the throne (Sultan: "First from the throne, and then from the minaret? Or first from the minaret and then from the throne?"). In fact, the sultan is caught in his own trap and almost fed to the lion , who spares him and camel before they are freed.

The opponents

The parrot- eaters Nenemama and Nenepapa are natives on the parrot- eater island , where they live in a hut in the jungle with their daughter Nenekiki . They are notorious for catching and frying parrots. Ka , which they take to be a parrot, is almost fed to the sick Nenekiki . Ka does not want to eat this at all, whereupon her parents simply want to eat it themselves. When Pips later gives Nenekiki pills, the girls become friends. Nenemama and Nenepapa do not like strangers on their island and it is implied that they are cannibals when Ka claims to Löwe that they want to eat Kim and Pips and Löwe wrongly assumes that the latter has already been eaten. Finally they promise their daughter, who is well again, that they will rename the island to "Parrot Keeper Island". Her first patient becomes Ka , who stays with Nenekiki .

After the fearful camel, the Grand Vizier is the closest confidante of the Sultan of Sultania whom he wants to overthrow. At first he succeeds in catching him in disguise with his own trap door, but he does not notice that Leo did not eat the Sultan as planned. His attempt to portray Doc , who had disguised himself as the mastermind of the conspirators, fails when he is hypnotized by him and locked in his own dungeon.
