The Magician (original title The Magician ) is an American film by Rex Ingram from 1926 . The film was based on the novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham .

action

The young sculptress Margaret is injured by a falling portrait. She is paralyzed, but is successfully managed by Dr. Arthur Burdon operates. An enigmatic man named Oliver Haddo is also present as a spectator at the operation, who says that the real art is not in healing, but in creating life. He finds an old recipe which, among other things, requires the blood of a virgin to carry it out.

From Dr. Arthur Burdon and Margaret become a couple. At a fair, the two of them meet Haddo, who demonstrates how he heals himself from the bite of a poisonous snake from a snake charmer. The next day, Haddo apologizes to Margaret for frightening her. She wants to send him away first, but succumbs to his hypnotic effect, whereupon he shows her a vision of hell.

Margaret feels safe from Haddo only in the presence of Arthur; she eagerly awaits the upcoming wedding with her groom. Suddenly she receives a message from Haddo that she should come to him urgently.

On the wedding day, the surprised Arthur receives a message from Margaret that she has been married to Haddo. Arthur suspects that this did not happen with Margaret's consent. He pursues the two; his trail leads him to Monte Carlo in a casino, where Haddo and Margaret are active as gamblers. Margaret asks Arthur to come to Latourette; In that place there is a laboratory in which Haddo is hiding with Margaret. Arthur takes Margaret to a sanatorium for her recovery. After days of absence, Haddo reappears in his laboratory and kidnaps Margaret to conduct his experiments with her there. Arthur and his friend Dr. Porhoet take up the chase. You can free Margaret just in time, Haddo's laboratory will be destroyed.
