The man without a past (original title: Mies vailla menneisyyttä) is an award-winning film by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki . It's the second part of a trilogy that started with clouds moving by and ended with lights of the suburbs .

action

A man arrives in Helsinki by train and is shortly attacked and knocked unconscious. When he came to in the hospital, he lost his memory. He can't even remember his name. He begins a new life in a container estate. While the authorities only put obstacles in his way as a nameless man, he finds help mainly from the socially disadvantaged and poor. In particular, he is supported by Irma, who works for the Salvation Army . They both eventually become a couple; in addition, the man's past is clarified.

classification

As in most of his films, Kaurismäki criticizes a society that does not care about its weakest. However, this film is much more positive than its predecessors, in which the protagonists mostly fail in the end. It is probably due to this fact that The Man Without a Past was also referred to as a “modern fairy tale”. As usual in Kaurismäki's works, the film is characterized by short dialogues and laconic humor.

Reviews

"A film that abducts, cheers, moves and caresses its audience."

"A miracle of poetic imagination, a fairy tale of perfect beauty, a film of grace and dignity, a ballad about solidarity among the humiliated and insulted and, in its gleaming primary colors, a pattern of opulent color dramaturgy."
