content

The young and gifted wedding, anniversary and funeral orator Grigori Petrovich Sapoikin is brought to the funeral of the college assistant professor Kirill Ivanovich Wawilonow. Although the latter assesses the deceased as a cunning fellow, beast and crook, he follows the urgent call of a friend. The deceased is carried to the grave so slowly that Sapoikin and the friend can stop for three quick stops along the way. Vavilonov died of two diseases that are widespread in Russia - alcohol and an angry woman. The latter cries when the coffin goes into the pit "heartbreakingly, as it should be". The widow even goes one better - screams that she wants to go down to her husband, but changes her mind.

As I said, the speaker Sapoikin knew the dear deceased, but confused him in his address with another secretary - Prokofi Osipowitsch, who was in the mourning community. The congregation whispered when the speaker gave the wrong name and praised a lively guy over the green clover.

After the ceremony, Prokofi Ossipowitsch forbids the only flaw raised in the speaker - his unsightly, ugly face.
