The Long Trek is an adventure series that was produced from 1979 to 1980 in the USA under the direction of Mel Stuart . From 1982 it ran for the first time on ZDF .

content

The series of 16 episodes in 2 seasons shows the adventures and experiences of the Chisholm family clan, led by the patriarch Hadley Chisholm, a liquor distiller and religious fundamentalist, and his wife Minerva, on their trek west to California . In a legal battle, the family clan lost all of their Virginia land , so they want to start over in California. After the eldest son Will has lost his wife and newborn baby, they set off on Hadley's orders and against his wife's wishes. On the way they are joined by the boy scout Lester Hackett, who is interested in the older daughter Bonnie Sue. The parents begin to doubt their plan and want to turn back, but are outvoted in a family vote by their three sons and their older daughter, whereupon the family moves on. The younger daughter Annabel succumbs to her injuries after an Indian attack. Shortly afterwards, the family, temporarily decimated by their two older sons, reaches Fort Laramie . They were in captivity in search of the alleged horse thief and refugee Hackett and found their people again in the fort, where Hackett arrived and was sentenced to death despite showing good intentions . He is saved by his supposed victim Will as the father of the future child of Bonnie Sue, whereupon he marries her. Under the leadership of the trek chief Hawkins and with the promise to the neighboring Indians that they would hand over provisions after a certain distance, they left the fort several wagons towards the west. In the fort, the Chisholms have taken in an orphan girl who outwardly resembles their killed daughter Annabel. After a steppe fire, food for cattle and people is scarce and the Indians are cheated of their flour, which is discovered and several deaths result. Meanwhile, son Will has rescued and married an Indian woman named Kewedinok, the sole survivor of a massacre, against the will of his racist father, who, however, soon befriends her. After crossing the desert and crossing the mountains, they arrive in California via the California Trails , with Hadley succumbing to a gunshot wound. Will names himself the new head of the family and warns his mother about the rich Mister Sinclair, who is courting her and whom she finally rejects.

Running Gag is a rattlesnake carried in a sack by Hadley that occasionally escapes and bites, but does not kill anyone.

Broadcast and publication

The episodes were first broadcast on Saturday at 7.30 p.m. on ZDF . They were repeated from 1984 and from 1988 on Sat.1 .

In 2010 a complete German DVD box with all episodes was released.
