The III. by Elimiotis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The III. ( Greek  Δέρδας ) was a prince of the Upper Macedonian landscape Elimiotis in the early 4th century BC. He was probably a son of Derdas II.

The III. had a brother named Machatas and a sister Phila , who was one of the first wives of King Philip II of Macedonia . This marriage is indicative of the vassalage of Elimiotis to the Macedonian kingship, which was already in the time of Amyntas III. has passed. In 350 BC In the 2nd century BC Derdas supported his brother-in-law in the Second Olynthian War , although he was captured by Olynthos .

Philip II seemed to have used this as a pretext to submit Elimiotis, as well as the other regions Orestis , Lynkestis , Tymphaia and Eordaia , to the kingship. Members of the royal families were now sent to the royal court in Pella for training and education , where they had to vouch for the loyalty of their families as hostages and to be ideologically bound to the royal family themselves. Some well-known companions of Alexander the Great were members of the princely families of the Upper Macedonian highlands. The companions Harpalus , Philippos and Tauron were probably the nephews of Derdas.
