action

“The plot is true to the original based on the fairy tale The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. But there are some adjustments. "

Jacob moves through the country and arrives in the city of the emperor. He made the acquaintance of Maja and Greta and found out about the need and poverty of the citizens because the Emperor Friedhelm spent a lot of time and money on his clothes. Jacob decides to change that and, through a trick, comes to an audience with the emperor. He claims to be the best weaver far and wide and promises to sew the most beautiful clothes for the emperor. These clothes have a special feature: anyone who is unforgivably stupid or not worthy of his office cannot see these clothes. The emperor is pleased because he thinks that he can recognize in this way which men in his kingdom are stupid or unsuitable for their office.

Jakob gets to work on the loom together with Maja and Greta. But there is no fabric on the loom. The emperor sends his closest confidante to report how well the work is going. He tells him that the clothes look splendid, even though he hasn't seen anything, so as not to appear stupid. When the emperor wanted to put on the finished clothes, he didn't see them either. But he says they are beautiful clothes because he wants to be considered fit for emperor.

The emperor presents his new clothes to the people. Everyone is amazed - they can't see anything - and say how beautiful the emperor's new clothes are. Nobody wants to let it be seen that they don't see anything. A small child finally says: “But he's not wearing anything!” This statement by an innocent child spreads among the people. Then the whole people tell the truth: The emperor is not wearing anything! The emperor, ashamed, realizes the truth. Unlike in the original, he laughingly accepts the situation and it allows him to see that beautiful clothes are not everything. When he is then persuaded to do more for his people and to release the innocent prisoners, he realizes that he can get a lot more appreciation than clothes ever would.

criticism

“... This interpretation also adds new details to the classic fairy tale material and so the clever Jakob gets two assistants [Maja and Greta] at his side. He can of course fall in love with one of them. In keeping with the theme, the film revels in an opulent and colorful setting. However, the fabulous focus is Matthias Brandt as the fashion and self-loving Kaiser Friedhelm. The way he gets into this role is divine and wonderfully entertaining to watch. Thanks to his performance, "The Emperor's New Clothes" becomes a small pearl in the series of consistently successful remakes of classic fairy tale materials. "
