Detlef Wächter

Detlef Wächter (* 1966 in Paderborn ) is a German diplomat . He has been Head of the Department of Politics in the Ministry of Defense since mid-2019 . Before that, he was Ambassador to Tanzania from 2017 to 2019 .

Life

Detlef Wächter studied history , political science and law in Bonn and Cambridge and obtained a master's degree in philosophy from Cambridge University in 1990 . In 1993 (or 1996) he received his doctorate in philosophy with a thesis on From Stresemann to Hitler - Germany 1928 to 1933 in the mirror of the reports of the English ambassador Sir Horace Rumbold in Bonn.

Wächter is married and has 3 children.

career

In 1994 Wächter joined the foreign service and completed the preparatory service for the higher foreign service by 1995. After his first assignment at the Foreign Office in Bonn, his first assignments abroad took him from 1997 to 1999 to the German embassy in Cairo and from 1999 to 2002 to the embassy in Helsinki . After a job in the political department of the Foreign Office (at the time already in Berlin), Wächter was a member of the German mission to NATO from 2005 to 2007 .

From 2007 to 2010 Wächter headed a department for security policy in the Federal Chancellery with responsibility for the USA, Canada, Western Europe and Turkey. He then moved to the German embassy in Washington , where he stayed until 2014. This was followed by a deployment in the State Department as head of the department responsible for North America. From 2015 to 2015 Wächter again worked in the Federal Chancellery as head of the security policy department for the NATO countries.

In 2017 Wächter was appointed ambassador to Tanzania . He stayed there until 2019 and then followed Géza Andreas von Geyr , who went to Russia as ambassador , as head of politics in the Ministry of Defense.
