Dettwiller ( German Dettweiler ) is a French town with 2,612 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It is located in the canton of Saverne , 36 km from Strasbourg . The place is a train station on the Paris – Strasbourg route and is crossed by the A4 motorway and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin .

Shoe industry

Around 1810 a spinning mill and a weaving mill were set up in the castle building with 180 employees. Around 1830, Mr. Roth, a shoemaker , started making shoes. Further companies were founded from 1870 onwards. Before World War II , a dozen factories employed around 900 people. A severe economic crisis between 1954 and 1960 caused the closure of numerous factories.

In 1960, Adolf Dassler founded the subsidiary Adidas France in the old Levy factory . He started with around 20 people and gradually took over other production plants and employed around 500 people in the 1980s. At that time the Sioux company , another shoe factory, employed around 150 people.
