history

The society was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Carl Schirren and emerged from the “Andrology” section of the German Society for the Study of Fertility and Sterility. V., which was founded in 1967, also at Schirren's suggestion. The independent company should better represent the interests of the relatively young subject. In particular, an expansion of the existing departments at universities, the intensification of student teaching and the creation of an additional medical designation “andrology”, which was applied for at the German Medical Association in 1991 , but was not implemented until 2003, were seen as necessary. In 2007 the company set up a commission for professional policy issues. Today the society has around 500 members.

aims

The association represents the interests of all specialist groups dealing with andrological issues in the fields of scientific work, advanced training, quality assurance and professional policy towards authorities and institutions. It strives to strengthen the competence of the andrology department and to establish the specialist content, especially in continuing education .

activities

The association has held annual conferences since 1987. In 1993 it published a resolution on artificial insemination, in 1996 recommendations for quality assurance, in 1998 an opinion on intracytoplasmic sperm injection (with the German Society for the Study of Fertility and Sterility ) and in 2001 an opinion on the therapy of hypogonadism with testosterone . In 2001 the QuaDeGA, a program for quality control in the andrology laboratory, was founded. 160 laboratories are now taking part in the organized round robin tests . In 2004 the policy paper "Testosterone in Aging Men" was published. The Journal for Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology has been the company's official organ since 2004, replacing the Andrologia magazine founded by Carl Schirren .
