The German Society for Medical Sociology (DGMS) is an association founded in 1972 to promote scientific work in the field of medical sociology . As a specialist society, it represents the professional policy issues of medical sociology in research, teaching and practice.

history

René König , Horst Baier and Karl Gustav Specht are among the founders of German-speaking medical sociology as an independent scientific discipline . Internationally, medical sociology is institutionally represented by a section in the world society for sociology.

Since its foundation in 1972, the society has been involved in research in basic and application-related research topics at national and international level and cooperates with the European Society of Health and Medical Sociology (ESHMS), the European Public Health Association (EUPHA), the Germans Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP) , the Medical Sociology Section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS) , the German Society for Medical Psychology (DGMP) , the German Society for Public Health (DGPH) and other psychosocial and health science / public health Professional societies and associations. There is also a cooperation with the Professional Association of German Sociologists (BDS) .

The association is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies .

developments

Medical sociology is taught as a special sociology in the course of social science studies , in the study of social work and social pedagogy , in the postgraduate study of health sciences and - compulsory - in the study of human medicine . In the context of public health , medical sociology has taken an important interdisciplinary position.

The licensing regulations require that medical psychology and medical sociology are equally represented in research and teaching . However, there is no guarantee that the next generation of academics will be available in the course of doctoral and habilitation opportunities. Because the further development of the subject such as the scientific qualification of young scientists in medical sociology is threatened; an indictment of Germany as a science location . In view of this problem, high-quality research and teaching within the meaning of the new licensing regulations is indispensable and forward-looking, according to the position paper on research and teaching.

To ensure the scientific discourse, working groups have been formed in the association:

  • Women & Health
  • Sociology of Health and Medical Sociology
  • Children & adolescents
  • Teaching
  • Medical sociological theories
  • Methods
  • Prevention and health promotion
