The German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine eV (DGSM) German Sleep Society is the German-speaking scientific society that deals with the research of sleep and its disorders as well as with the clinical examination and treatment of sleep and wake disorders . The association is based in Hephata (Schwalmstadt) and is entered in the register of associations at the Marburg District Court under the registration number VR 5176.

It was founded in 1992; Direct predecessor organizations were the working group for clinical sleep centers (AKS since 1987, founded by Eckart Rüther) and the working group “Nocturnal respiratory and circulatory regulation disorders” (founded by Herrmann Peters) of the German Society for Pneumology (since 1984).

First chairman was Matthias Berger (until 1994), most recently (until 2018) Alfred Wiater and currently (as of 08/2019) Peter Young holds this office. About 300 sleep laboratories are accredited nationwide by the DGSM ; it itself is recognized as a specialist society by the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies .

The magazine " Somnologie " was founded on the initiative of Eckart Rüther "as the official organ of the DGSM. The term somnology comes from Eckart Rüther.
