The German International School Johannesburg (DSJ) is a school founded in Johannesburg in 1890 with around 1030 students from 27 nations (as of 2009).

The DSJ includes kindergarten , pre-school , elementary school and advanced grades that do not correspond to the three-tier school system , but the qualifications after grades 9, 10 and 12 are equivalent to their corresponding counterparts in Germany. As usual in South Africa , the school years correspond to the calendar year .

The attendance of non -German speaking children in kindergarten and pre-school, which has been possible since 2002, serves to acquire the language through play, so that the transition to grade 1 of elementary school is possible. The building complex for all kindergarten and pre-school classes, which was inaugurated in March 2006, expanded the space available at the school, additional specialist rooms could be set up in the elementary school and the class size continued to be kept at a low level of around 20 students.

Based on the German school offers the DSJ from 2009 high school degrees after 12 school years, the last year with completion after 13 years is the end of 2009. The 2007 introduced new educational program, the students in the tenth grade before the option of either the combination arm with end with the German International Abitur and the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the branch with a degree after the NSC and additionally the German language diploma (DSD 2).

In addition to regular lessons, the DSJ sees itself as a learning and living space for the students. In 2008 there were a total of 60 inclination courses and working groups, and there are spacious sports facilities on the almost 8 hectare site. Other focal points of the working groups are music, such as the school band , instrumental groups, choirs and traditional German dance lessons as well as groups for chess and IT .

As part of the outreach program , the school offers additional classes on Saturdays for approximately 80 students from 43 different primary schools in Soweto . These fourth grade children are taught English , math , arts and life studies at the DSJ . After one year, about 20 of these students are admitted to the fifth grade of the DSJ, until the tenth grade they are regular students of the DSJ with the exception of German lessons.
