The German Ice Skating Association (DELV) was the national ice sports association of the German Democratic Republic , which was founded on August 31, 1958 and had its seat in Berlin . The association included the sections ice hockey , speed skating and ice stock sport .

On August 31, 1958, the association was founded in the club rooms of TSC Oberschöneweide , in which all ice hockey players, art and high-speed skaters and ice shooters were united. Delegates, among them the master of sport Helmut Kuhnert , unanimously elected the previous president of the ice and roller hockey section Heinz Dragunski from SC Dynamo Berlin as president . In the annual report presented, shortcomings and weaknesses of the past were relentlessly uncovered. For future work, clear objectives for increasing performance were decided.

ice Hockey

As the ice and roller hockey section of the German Sports Committee , the later ice hockey section of the DELV was accepted into the World Association IIHF on June 9, 1954 .

The GDR's first international match, on the other hand, took place on January 28, 1951 in east Berlin against Poland (3: 8). In 1956 , the GDR took part in a B world championship for the first time. In 1968 the GDR was represented for the only time at the Olympic Games (in Grenoble ). The qualification for the previous Winter Games in 1956 was won by the West German selection, and the West German DEB selection team also went off the ice as winners in the qualifying games in 1960 and 1964 .

In addition to looking after the GDR national team , the association also ran the league games in the GDR. This included the Oberliga and the group league until 1970 . From 1970 onwards, the top league was limited to two participants by the competitive sports decision , while the group league was replaced by the annual determination of the best .

In 1990 the GDR took part in a world championship for the last time. The ice hockey section resigned from the DELV in advance and was constituted in January 1990 as an independent German ice hockey federation of the GDR , which immediately started talks with the German ice hockey federation regarding a joint cooperation. With effect from August 31, 1990, the GDR Association left the IIHF. On September 11, 1990, the incorporation into the German Ice Hockey Federation followed, on September 14, 1990 the two previous league clubs EHC Dynamo Berlin and PEV Weißwasser started in the ice hockey Bundesliga . Ice hockey was the first sport in which the leagues of the FRG and the GDR were united.

Speed skating

The speed skaters of the GDR belonged to the international top and collected medals for the GDR in almost all international competitions.
