The German Poland Institute was founded in Darmstadt in 1980 by Karl Dedecius . With its program, the institute helps to deepen the mutual knowledge of the cultural and intellectual life of Poles and Germans . It deals with Polish society, history and culture as well as with German-Polish relations in the context of European integration. Politics, science, the general public and the media are addressed. As the successor to Karl Dedecius, Dieter Bingen was director of the institute from 1999 to the end of September 2019 ; he was succeeded by his previous deputy Peter Oliver Loew as the new director. The President is the former President of the Bundestag Rita Süssmuth .

Headquarters of the institute

Since February 2016, the institute has been housed in renovated rooms in the Herrenbau of Darmstadt Palace . Before that, it was located on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt in the Olbrich house from 1980 and in the Deiters house since 1996 .

activities

science

The German Poland Institute has set itself the task of creating a stronger network of scientists from the most varied of disciplines in German-speaking countries who are involved in research into Poland and German-Polish relations. As a first result, the first conference “German Polish Studies” took place in Darmstadt at the end of February 2009, bringing together almost 250 scientists. Apart from this, the institute regularly organizes specialist and young talent conferences, mostly in cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions.

school

The German Poland Institute has been involved in schools for many years. After booklets with student and teacher materials on Poland and German-Polish relations for the subjects German (2003), history (2007) and social studies (2012) were published, a textbook “Polish as a Foreign Language” was published in 2009 for German high schools. The DPI also conducts teacher training. Since 2014, free teaching materials for school lessons have been available on the Internet platform "Poland at School". The latest project is the “Polenmobil”, which visits schools across Germany and provides information about Poland.

Culture and public

The traditional focus of the DPI on cultural mediation is still reflected in the Poland Yearbook. Here, one main topic is conveyed in essay and literary form. Readings, exhibitions, panel discussions and lectures in Darmstadt, but also in other locations, complete the program.

Politics and media

The DPI reaches wide circles with the “Poland Analyzes”, a bi-weekly information service sent by e-mail. There are also parliamentary workshops and the institute tries to maintain close contacts with politics and ministries.

Library and collections

The German Poland Institute has the largest special library on Poland, past and present, as well as on German-Polish relations in Germany. There are also various archives and bequests.

Promotion of young talent

The German Poland Institute awards several research grants for several weeks of work in the institute's collections. The interdisciplinary summer academy as well as youth conferences and the possibility of completing internships complete the offer.
