Devínska Nová Ves (German Theben-Neudorf , Hungarian Dévényújfalu , Croatian [Devinske] Novo Selo ) is a district in northwest Bratislava (Pressburg) on the March (Morova) north of the Thebener Kogel (Slovak Devínska Kobyla ). The March forms the border to the Lower Austrian communities Marchegg and Engelhartstetten in the Gänserndorf district .

Description and history

View of the Devínska Nová Ves district .

The place is an important paleoanthropological site. In 1957, in the area of today's Bratislava, 7 skeletons of the primate (Epi) Pliopithecus vindobonensis came to light. These have been dated to an age of 25 to 15 million years. More recent (14-10 million years ago ) are the tooth finds of a Griphopithecus suessi (formerly known as Dryopithecus darwini or Sivapithecus darwini ), which were discovered in the same area in 1902. An important site for fossils is the sand mountain on the western slope of Devínska Kobyla.

Working tools of the Neanderthal man from the Paleolithic Age were discovered here, and there were also documented settlements in the Neolithic , Eneolithic , Bronze Age , Hallstatt , La Tène , Roman times, a Great Moravian hill fort surrounded by several settlements / ramparts and early Slovak settlements. In addition, tombs from the Young Bronze Age, the Migration Period , a huge Slavic- Avar and Avar tomb from the 7th century (it is important for describing the conditions at the beginning of the Samo Empire ) and a Great Moravian tomb were discovered.

The place was initially just called Neudorf (with equivalents in Slovak and Hungarian) and was first mentioned in this form in 1451 (according to other sources not until 1553). He paid tribute to Thebes Castle .

In the 1530s, Croatians seeking refuge from the Turks settled here and for a long time were the main population of the village. Since the 16th century the community was called Croatian Neudorf (with equivalents in Slovak and Hungarian). Although the official name was Nowa Wass / Dévén-Uj-Falu / Theeben-Neudorf as early as the 18th century , the proportion of Croatian-born residents remained high. They were mainly active in agriculture. In 1910 there were 2817 inhabitants in the place, of which 1164 stated Croatian, 917 Slovak, 365 Hungarian and 201 German as their mother tongue or the most frequently used language.

Since January 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality has belonged to the city of Bratislava (Pressburg) as a district . Today the Volkswagen factory, which is extremely important for the Slovak economy, is located here .

traffic

The railway connection from Marchegg in Austria from Vienna ( Marchegger Ostbahn with bridge over the March) to Bratislava joins the main line from the north from Prague to Bratislava ( railway line Devínska Nová Ves - Skalica na Slovensku ) in the local station . Until the end of 2007, the station was therefore a border station towards Austria; since then there are no more border controls here.

Bicycle bridge of freedom : In September 2012 a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists was opened over the March between the village and Schloss Hof . The project received media attention through an internet vote in Slovakia, in which in the first few days the majority of the participants voted in favor of naming the bridge after the actor Chuck Norris .
