Devin Lamar Harris (born February 27, 1983 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American basketball player who was active for most of his professional career in the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks , most recently until 2019.

From 2008 to 2011 he was under contract with the New Jersey Nets and was elected NBA All-Star in the 2008/09 season .

Career

High school and college

Harris attended East High School in Wauwatosa . There he played both basketball and volleyball for one season . There he was appointed to the All Conference team. After a year in high school, he decided to retire from volleyball to devote himself entirely to basketball. In his sophomore season he was rarely used due to various injuries. In his senior season, his performances exploded and he set a new scoring record. Furthermore, his team ended the season undefeated and Harris was elected Mr. Basketball 2001 in the state of Wisconsin.

His number 20 jersey was exhibited at Wauwatosa East in 2007.

Harris accepted the offer from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and played for the Wisconsin Badgers . He was the second player to have made it to the starting line-up as a freshman , sophomore and junior . In its freshman year, the Badgers won the Big Ten Conference. The following year they won again and qualified for the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , where they reached the Sweet Sixteen . Despite a strong performance Harris' had to admit defeat his team from the University of Kentucky .

In his junior season, Harris established himself as one of the most prominent college players in the country. He became Big Ten Player of the Year , received the Silver Basketball Award and was named to the Second Team All-American . Harris decided to sign up for the NBA draft after his third college season.

NBA

Dallas Mavericks

Harris was selected 5th by the Washington Wizards in the 2004 NBA Draft . As previously agreed with the Dallas Mavericks , the Wizards exchanged Harris with Jerry Stackhouse and Christian Laettner in return for Antawn Jamison .

In Dallas, he grew up to be a good playmaker in the shadow of Steve Nash . Nash then decided, in the off-season, to accept an offer from the Phoenix Suns . Under coach Don Nelson Harris started in the first 19 games of the 2004/05 season and was voted Rookie of the Month of November. In March 2005 Nelson resigned and Avery Johnson became the new head coach of the Mavs, who built on Jason Terry in the starting lineup. At the end of the season, Harris had 5.7 points, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals.

Harris was characterized above all by his speed and good defense. Coach Johnson asked his point guard to be more efficient on the offensive. Harris started the 2005/06 season better , but had to sit out two games in January due to an injury to his right shoulder and 24 games from March due to a quadriceps injury. He played a total of 56 games in the regular season, four of them as a starter. He improved his stats to 9.9 points and 3.2 assists per game.

Just in time for the playoffs , he returned to the rotation of the Mavericks and played a major role in the victory over arch-rivals San Antonio Spurs . In a nerve-wracking seven-game series, it was Harris who took responsibility and punished the Spurs, who mainly looked after Dirk Nowitzki , Josh Howard and Jason Terry on the defensive . He managed to score 20, 24 and 18 points in 3 consecutive games. In the NBA Finals, however, the Mavericks had to admit defeat to the Miami Heat 2: 4. In 23 playoff games, including 15 as a starter, Harris posted 9.4 points and 2.2 assists.

In the 2006/07 season Harris started in 61 of a total of 81 games. He put on 10.2 points, 3.7 assists and 1.2 steals on average and helped the Mavericks around MVP Nowitzki to achieve a record of 67:15. However, the Mavericks' title dreams were dashed in the first round when they surprisingly lost 4-2 to eighth place in the Western Conference , the Golden State Warriors . In 6 games Harris was the only bright spot in the otherwise disastrous playoff series with 13.2 points and 5.0 assists.

Harris was considered the Mavs point guard of the future and was awarded a $ 42 million contract after the 2007 season , with a duration of 5 years. As a result, Harris matured more and more to a leader. The 2007/08 season was his strongest to date. In 39 games as a starter, he scored 14.4 points, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

However, in mid-February 2008, Harris was sent to the Nets in a major trade to New Jersey . In return, the Mavericks received veteran Jason Kidd, among others . Harris became a star with the Nets and was able to improve his stats significantly. In 2009 he was voted into the NBA All-Star Game .

February 2011 Harris was transferred to Utah together with teammate Derrick Favors as part of a trade between the Nets, the Utah Jazz and the Golden State Warriors . In return, all-star Deron Williams joined the Nets. With the Jazz Harris could not build on his performance in the Nets times. Its statistical values plummeted in Utah.

The Jazz traded Harris to the Atlanta Hawks in July 2012 in exchange for Marvin Williams . With the Hawks, Harris made it into the 2013 playoffs, but retired with the team in the first round.

Since 2013

For the 2013/2014 season , Harris moved back to the Mavericks after his contract expired, where he received a contract until 2016. Due to an injury, however, he only played 40 games and scored 7.9 points and 4.5 assists per game.

Harris played for the Mavericks until early 2018; as a substitute he received around 20 minutes of playing time per game. On February 8, 2018, Harris was given to the Denver Nuggets in a three-team trade. In March of the same year, the Guard managed to win its 10,000. To achieve career point.

During the NBA off-season , on August 8, 2018, Harris moved a third time to the Dallas Mavericks and played the 2018/19 season there to the end.
