Decidualization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Decidualization refers to a process in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle in women.

During decidualization, the stromal cells begin to develop into decidual cells in the area of the stratum compactum , especially under the influence of progesterone . The cells take on an epithelioid shape, store glycogen and fat, are rounded and pressed tightly together. This process happens regardless of whether the egg cell is fertilized or not. However, the decidualization process is only completed after the blastocyst has been successfully implanted .
