Diamond detective Dick Donald was an adventure series on ZDF that ran weekly in the evening program. There were 13 episodes of 25 minutes each; created by the directors Jürgen Goslar (episodes 1–7) and Erich Neureuther (episodes 8–13) based on the scripts by Heinz Bothe-Pelzer (episodes 1–13).

The series was filmed on location in South Africa in 1970 and describes the adventures of the eponymous detective Dick Donald ( Götz George ), who is used against diamond robbers. The athletic daredevil proves himself in almost every episode in fights and action scenes and is also successful as a womanizer. The detective is supported by his assistant Daisy ( Loni von Friedl , married to George at the time).

Apart from the two main roles, almost all other roles were cast with South African actors who were unknown in the ZDF broadcasting area.

Diamond detective Dick Donald was supposed to build on the great success of the similar series Percy Stuart , but did not achieve their popularity and was therefore discontinued after 13 episodes. Götz George played one of his first TV leading roles in the series and performed almost all of the stunts himself.

At the end of the 13th episode, Donald sags bleeding after being stabbed in the chest with a knife. Whether he survived the attack was never determined as the series was discontinued.
