Diana Widmaier Picasso (born March 12, 1974 ) is a French art historian . The granddaughter of the painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso is the author of numerous publications about her grandfather and is considered an expert on his sculptures.

Life

Diana Widmaier Picasso was born to Pierre Widmaier and Maya Widmaier Picasso. The father's family is in the shipping trade. Her mother is the only child from the relationship between Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter, which lasted from 1927 to 1937 . Although her grandparents were not married, Diana, like her mother, bears the name Widmaier Picasso, as this is possible under Spanish law. She grew up in Paris and learned about her grandfather's artistic work as a child through family-owned work. International media interest aroused in 2007 a break-in into Diana Widmaier Picasso's Paris apartment, during which thieves stole the two paintings Maya à la poupée and Portrait de Jacqueline as well as two drawings. Six months later, the police arrested the intruders and found the two paintings and one of the drawings.

As an art historian, Diana Widmaier Picasso initially dealt with old master drawings before she devoted herself mainly to the work of her grandfather. She has published numerous articles on Pablo Picasso and helps organize exhibitions about his work on various occasions. Examples are Picasso: Challenging the Past , which was shown in the National Gallery in London in 2009 , or Picasso and Marie-Thérèse: L'amour Fou , which was shown in the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2011 . Diana Widmaier Picasso has been working on the four-volume catalog raisonné of the sculptures by Pablo Picasso since 2003.
